Between 29-30 July 2017, Arsenal was the host of the football mini-tournament, Emirates Cup played on the home ground on Emirates Stadium in London. This was the 9th edition of the tournament and the holder of the title Arsenal managed to keep the trophy again in 2017 after a gap of one year. In 2016 this competition didn’t took place because UEFA Euro 2016. This year in London arrived the Bundesliga title runners RB Leipzig, from Premiera Liga Benfica and from La Liga Sevilla. As per the rules of the competition for every victory teams gain 3 points, draw 1 point and loss 0 points. In addition to this, every goal scored brings a point and if the difference between teams is tight, then are calculated the shoots on target. Arsenal smashed Benfica in opening game 5-2 and after loosing to Sevila 1-2, managed to win again the competition on the points and goals difference.

RB Leipzig 0-1 Sevilla
In the beginig of the game the RB Leipzig started with a clear desire to win the game having first ocasion in front of the Sevilla goal. After a counter attack Walter Montoya was tackled in the box and referee pointed to the penalty spot. Ben Yedder finished strong and put Sevilla one goal ahead. It seemed to be first and the last goal of the game and despite the chances and substitutes from both side the score remained unchanged. Sevilla got 4 points(victory plus 1 goal) and was preparing to meet Arsenal the following day.

Arsenal 5-2 Benfica
Without any doubt Arsenal vs Benfica was the title of the day, two great clubs with titles in domestic and international competition had the change to check their play before the start of the new season. Arsenal the holder of 4 Emirates Cup found themselves behind shortly after the beginning of the game when after the deflection of Per Mertesacker, Benfica’s Franco Cervi opened the score on the 11th minute. Arsenal reply with two goals from Theo Walcott, but the Eduardo Salvio leveled the score just before the end of the first half. Arsenal started better the second half and the goals from Lisandro Lopez(own goal on 52′), Oliver Giroud(64′) and Alex Iwobi (71′) sealed the gunners victory with an impressive 8 points for the game(3 points for the win and 5 points for scored goals).

RB Leipzig 2-0 Benfica
After loosing their first games in the opening day, both teams were searching for a victory. The first season Bundesliga’s RB Leipzig, who were title contenders in 2016/2017 in Germany had a better day on the pitch. Marcel Halstenberg and Marvin Compper scored crucial goals for RB Leipzig in each time of the game, Germans finishing the tournament on a positive note. Portuguese champions left Emirates Cup 2017 with only two point gained in the defeat against Arsenal and Rui Victoria got serious points to think about before Benfica’s start of the season in Portugal.

Arsenal 1-2 Sevilla
The paradox of the game was that even Sevilla had 100% result during competition with wins over Arsenal and RB Leipzig, the host got the trophy due the rule of the points obtained by goals, mostly because of the 5-2 victory against Benfica. The game was in general an open one with missed half occasions from both sides. Sevilla went in front on 49th minute through Joaquin Correa. Alexandre Lacazette the new record signing of Arsenal equalized(62′) after a great ball work of Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right side. Sevillia performance overall was looking much better, the pass of the ball, the combination and the rhythm of the play and as a result on 69th minute N’Zonzi put his team ahead with a wonderful shoot outside of the box. Sevillia won the game but Arsenal was the team retaining the Emirates Cup for the fifth time and lifting the trophy.
