PSG, the abbreviation of Paris St Germain FC, was formed in 1970 by the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain and has competed in the top tier of French football, Ligue 1, since 1974. Among their many trophies PSG have won Ligue 1 six times, the Coupe de France ten times (itself a record), the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup once and the UEFA Intertoto Cup once. PSG is the second highest supported club in France, second only to their rivals Marseilles but in many opinions the most successful. The club have just separated from their manager Lauren Blanc who has been in position since 2013. Laurent led PSG to the Ligue 1 title in each of his three seasons in charge, but lost in the Champions League quarter-finals each year, the latest disappointment being against Manchester City. With their new manager Unai Emery under pressure to improve on his predecessor’s results, PSG should be a team well worth watching in the seasons ahead.
